There are two, maybe three, readily available robots in the field now acting
as personal assistants to military and security personnel. Some small to be
carried like a briefcase, some larger. I understand they are expensive; but
cheap if they can save one single life.

In your opinion, what characteristics, programming options, hardware,
interfaces and mobility would the ideal military robot have? Considering all
the new 'stuff' coming onto the market, could we not build a robot very
specific to end user need much like we can buy a car by looking at colors,
combinations, options on a computer at the dealership and push "Buy" and
have it delivered within a week? Call it "Build to Order" type robot. Like
some industrial computers that can be bought that way - by just plugging in
the option and at the factory it's whipped together and shipped UPS the next
morning for one day delivery.

So... what would be on your list?

Could you provide examples and links to these?

Well, no one on our side could buy it, given the way GAO procurement
goes. But I'm sure the enemy would be ordering in mass quanity. I don't
know if discussing such ideas in the open is best for our own security.
What do you think?

The enemy strap themselves into the bomb and look forward to meeting the 72
virgins and don't give a damn about self preservation. We honor life, they
honor death. Besides, reading the Koran is certainly not going to lead them
into programming a robot and the one or two out of a thousand are more
involved in making the bombs that kill our people than detecting our own
homemade devices... which don't exist.

But you have a point. And should be considered.
